Our Educational Philosophy

At Bird’s Nest, we believe young children learn best through an emergent, play-based curriculum that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit. Our program is grounded in the understanding that children thrive when they are given opportunities to explore, create, build relationships, and engage in meaningful hands-on learning experiences.

Our teaching practices are aligned with the Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards (IELDS) and emphasize:

  • exploration
  • creativity
  • social-emotional development
  • hands-on learning

We believe teachers should remain actively engaged with children throughout the day through conversation, play, guidance, and participation in classroom activities. By building warm, responsive relationships, we create a learning environment where children feel safe, valued, and inspired to grow.

We closely observe children’s interests, needs, and engagement levels, and we use those observations to guide planning in keeping with an emergent curriculum approach. Activities and daily plans are adjusted as needed to reflect children’s curiosity, developmental needs, and the natural dynamics of the classroom.

We also value the importance of movement and time outdoors and strive to provide children with regular opportunities for outdoor play and exploration as an essential part of healthy development and learning.
